dudemanflab's Diaryland Diary

Today I called a faculty member from Oregon that I really want to work with these next few years. Wanted to introduce myself, meet her, et cetera.

This prof. is the one I pulled a foot-in-mouth maneuver initially, comparing her research with inter-animal communication (a la the peaceful act sheepherding) to my pheasant hunting trip with my dad. I found out AFTER I sent her the email that she's a famous environmental activist, who probably does not place shooting animals high on her esteemed activities list.

With this , however, I dialed the numbers she'd given me three months later, the whole time amazed at how my heart was beating, adrenaline rising. It's only a professor, right?

Got a voicemail. Too uncertain of what to say, I hung up, long enough for her to receive that infamous "new message" that is only a cluttered jostling of the receiver and the finality of the operator pulling the plug.

Oh well. We'll talk tomorrow.
