thoughts on fingers

How did people trim their nails before clippers? Like in the middle ages, kings and serfs.

Biting? That seems the most obvious and direct method, but what a chore it must have been, especially for stablehands.

Using a knife? That would be a skill to learn. Ye olde nail-blade. Squires with bloody fingertips, "Aye, but it makes me a stronger man."

Files? first choice of wenches and ladies-in-waiting everywhere.
